Facts and Figures

Drowning

  • It is estimated that over 4000 people in the US drown every year.   (11 drowning deaths per day)
  • Drowning is the leading cause of death in 1-4 year olds and second leading in 5-14 year olds.
  • 88% of all boating deaths were not wearing a PFD (life jacket).
  • Alcohol was a factor in 70% of deaths among adolescents and adults.
  • Many untrained "Rescuers" become victims themselves.

Wearing a PFD while on the water dramatically increases the odds of surviving an incident in the water.
